They say there are two types of biker... those who have had a bike stolen and those who will have their bike stolen.

I now fall in the former category and who knows, may still qualify for the latter.  My Kawasaki ZX-7R was stolen - from a garage and with a chain to ground anchor plus a disk lock!  And it wasn't even professionals - no, local youths out for a joy ride!

Now as it happens, both were Oxford products and when I emailed them, I got the following reply:  "Firstly my commiserations about your theft. Once it happens to you, you always wish that you had gone to town with security in the first place. The lock and chain you had is really in the middle range security bracket."

So please don't think like I did (stupidly) that all chains are equal - in fact it appears even quite heavy duty chains can be bolt cropped.  And I guess if I had a quality alarm fitted then that may have prevented the loss.

The best bet appears to be to look for Thatcham or Sold Secure products and to go for as many "layers" of security as you can afford - and keep chains and locks off the ground.

Good luck and maybe some of the following links will be of use:

Almax

Abus

Datatool

Thatcham

Sold Secure (see comment from one visitor below)

PS my bike was recovered half a mile away - they never did get it started, so just smashed it up.  It was an insurance write-off.  No excuses - get your bike secured.

And a visitor to this site adds:

Just one thing - you recommend a sold secure chain and lock. I am a locksmith as well as a Harley owner and rider therefore have some insight into Sold Secure and bought one to put it round my stepson's 125 Yamaha - came out to find the same as you, chain on floor, bike gone.

The moral of the story is this there are three grades of Sold Secure: Gold, Silver and Bronze. Unfortunately on the packaging of a lot of these locks and chains it does not say anything other than Sold Secure     - Gold is the only one to buy.
